Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

The cost to paint the exterior of a house depends on various factors:

  • square footage being painted
  • the height of the house
  • paint grade being used
  • items being painted--walls, trim, cabinets, ceilings, etc.
  • zip code of the house
  • warranty length
In the San Antonio area expect to pay anywhere from $2.52 to $5.16 per square feet of surface area being painted for a full interior--including walls and trim. You can check for yourself by going to Homewyse.com and eneter your information.

How long should an interior paint job last?

Paint on interior wall typically gets dirty, stained, or rubs away from normal wear and tear. It rarely just starts to flake (unless there is some kind of moisture issue). Paint on trim tends to get nicked or chipped wih wear and tear. The biggest culprit for trim wearing out is natural oil on your hand. If you look at your kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanities you can easily tell where its being touched the most by the worn out look of the paint. Fading does occur where surfaces are exposed to the UV rays from the sun. These UV rays slowly wear away at the protective coating leading a dull look. If you have a full household--especially with young kids--expect to be paintnig more often than someone who doesn't. That's why when selecting the grade of paint, it is very important you select a paint that is going to hold up to wear and tear as long as possible. It may cost you a little more upfront but will last you longer.

Is primer required to paint the interior of a house?

Primer should be used on:

  • drywall repairs
  • stained or brand new wood, vanities, and trim
  • water stains
Think of primer as the glue that holds together the surface being painted and the new paint. In addition it keeps stained wood to bleed through the top coat. Some designers and architects may call for a base primer to enhance color. We would just say that you are not really going to know if it makes a difference--or at least a big enough reason--to take that extra step. In this case it would be worthwhile to compare a section with primer against a section that has two coats of paint and then decide.

How long does it take to complete an interior paint project?

Painting walls goes pretty fast but there a couple of things that can affect the timeline:

  • height of walls
  • number of rooms
  • size of crew assigned to project
  • oil based primer
Painting trim is more involved because of the following:
  • masking off
  • de-glossing the existing paint
  • sanding
  • applying primer
  • removing doors and hardware
It is critical you get assigned a crew that can complete the work in a timely manner. If it's a full interior project including walls, trim, ceilings, and cabinets you may need a crew of about 4 painters. Our goal is try and finish the large projects within 7 days.
