Challenges of Removing Popcorn Ceilings
Asbestos Hazards in Popcorn Ceilings
If your home was constructed before the 1980s, it may contain asbestos, a dangerous substance associated with respiratory illnesses. Disturbing ceilings that contain asbestos can release harmful fibers into the air. Testing is required before any work begins. If asbestos is confirmed, it must be removed by a certified asbestos removal company.

Coated or Painted Popcorn Ceilings
Removing painted popcorn ceilings is quite challenging. The paint serves as a barrier, stopping water from reaching the drywall. As a result, heavy-duty sanding is needed to remove the texture. In more extreme situations, multiple sanding, skim coating, and further finishing may be necessary. This not only increases the labor involved but also prolongs the overall project timeline.

Ceiling Drywall Damages
Ceiling drywall can often be cracked or damaged to the extent that replacement is necessary. Many homeowners believe that merelypatching" the affected areas is sufficient to restore a fresh appearance. However, this approach typically leads to visible repairs. For a flawless finish, it is advisable to completely remove the popcorn texture from one edge to the other in the room.

Eliminate that outdated 80's popcorn ceiling!

A significant disadvantage of popcorn ceilings is the effort needed to maintain and repair their surface. Dust, cobwebs, and dirt can easily accumulate in the texture, while smoke may leave stains that are tough to remove. While a duster or vacuum brush can help clean debris, excessive pressure can break off particles, leading to more cosmetic issues.
If too many bumps fall off during cleaning or if holes, repairing them is labor-intensive. You must first scrape off the surrounding bumps and sand area smooth before applying drywall plaster, then sand again and paint.
Regular brushes cannot be used for this type of ceiling, as the texture will come off when wet. A segmented foam roller is necessary for the job, or you can use spray products like Homax, though they may not perfectly match the original texture. It's advisable to seek help from a popcorn ceiling expert for maintenance and repairs.
Additionally water damage can cause the texture to loosen and peel over time. Leaks can weigh down the stipple, leading to further deterioration. Therefore, areas with high moisture, such as and bathrooms, are better suited for smooth ceilings to prevent these issues.

Ceiling Popcorn Removal Procedure
Step #1
Prep the space

We clear furniture from the room if possible. If it's not feasible then furniture is moved to the center of the room and covered with plastic. All walls are masked off with plastic so that the texture being applied does not land walls and then require additional cleanup. Entry doors are masked off to keep dust from floating into other rooms. Floors are masked with paper. Wall light fixtures and hanging lights are masked with plastic. Typically electrical wall plats, baseboards, and wall or ceiling joists are protected by the masking plastic already attached to the walls against over spray.
Step #2
Smooth the surface

After the room is prepped, the existing popcorn is literally scrapped off with a giant spatula looking tool. The popcorn is dampened with water and then slowly removed. We never know what's under the popcorn so there are times when divots or cracks may have to be spackled smooth. The goal at this step is to have as smooth a ceiling as possible.
Step #3
Apply primer to expose drywall

In order to have a uniform look after applying the new texture, it is critical to apply primer. Keep in mind that after the popcorn is removed there will be all kinds of seams and lines showing. If those seam lines are not primed they will bleed through after the knockdown is applied. The primer also serves as a glue to bind the new texture with the drywall.
Step #4
Splatter the surface

At this step, the painter will mix mud, pour the it into the hopper or machine, and then start systematically applying the joint compound to the ceiling. Once this starts, the painter does not stop until the entire sections are completed. once the texture has set for the proper time--about 15-20 minutes--then the high peaks are knocked down with the knockdown knife.
